What have you learnt about technologies from the product of constructing this product?
For this filming process, I used a Fujifilm S5Pro in which I took over 400 still frames to create my film. I used a Mac and Final Cut Pro to edits my clips together and add in effects. The top left hand box is to show everything you have imported into the programme. The screen with the image in is where I can see the edits to my film after I have rendered each section. The time line at the bottom is just the same as the iMovie timeline, where you edit your images together creating the full film. I learnt alot from this programme as I taught myself how to use this and learnt what each feature on the programme was. I feel that I have done a very good job learning how to work the programme and without this I do not think I would have been able to create my film in the same way.

To create each stop motion clip, I used istopmotion usually setting the frame rate to 6fps. To create an animation on this program
me you have to import each photograph straight from the digital camera, choose your frame rate and then the images are imported and put together for you. I found this programme a struggle as it always froze and crashed and then I had to restart the programme and re-import my images. I also found it quiet difficult to know how fast the frame rate would actually make the film so there was alot of trial and error in each of the stop motion animations I made.

To create the opening title of 'Un Autre Jour' I used Photoshop CS4. I have alot of knowledge with this programme and use it frequently so I found it easy to create this title. I then imported the Jpeg image straight into Final Cut Pro where it was edited together with the rest of the film.

In order to keep my shots steady I used a tripod for each photograph I took. I found this is a struggle in many photographs I had to take, particularly the part where the curtains open by themselves as to get this shot central I had to put the tripod and camera on my bed and hope that it stayed in the same place throughout each photograph.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

I would say that the main target audience was children between the ages of 7-14. I also believe that this is a film suitable for the whole family however. I would say that the audience of my film would be intersted in the newer non-animated Walt Disney films for example Hannah Montana and High School Musical which is aimed at young teens. I think that my choice of music (Lesley Hunt - American Dream Man) also fits in well with these films and my audience as it is very catchy, upbeat and pop sounding. I feel that I have done a good job of creating a film for my original target audience and think that they would enjoy it and not get bored. The photograph above is Lily. I took this photograph of her smiling as it shows that she is a happy girl and I feel that this is exactly the age range of person that I am aiming my film at.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Lex is the only character that I have in my film. I would say that the only film I would be able to make a comparison with in terms of age, personality and ability would be Sabrina the Teenage Witch. We do not know how the character of my film would talk or act but we get the idea just from seeing her.

Although her powers are more similar to that of Matilda, she is much younger so the comparison is not as similar. In this photograph still shot of the film Matilda, we can see this is the part of the film where Matilda calls the book over with her powers. There is no sparkle in the way that Sabrina the Teenage Witch has them and I feel that it is very similar to my film.
As a complete contrast to this, the main character from 'The Ring' at the begininning is also similar in appearence however without them even talking, we can see from the lighting, the music and the general mood from the film completely changes the way a character will act and come across to the audience.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Special effects, camerawork and editing
Genre
Title font and style
My first screenshot shows the titles of my film. I have not yet seen this font as far as I am aware on any other type of film therefore I cannot compare the type of film that uses fonts like this. It shows what kind of film it'll be however with the cartoony style and the mismatched shape. I used a font face called ' ' which I think suits my film well and is unusual.

Titles
I chose to call my film 'Un Autre Jour' meaning 'Another Day' in French. I called it this as it is quiet a simple name but having it in another language demonstrates the originality of my film.

Setting and Location
I decided to film the opening sequence in my house. This is very similar to Matilda in the scene when she is in her house and has the magical powers to open the curtains, move food around and turn music on. I used the idea of the curtains opening by themselves and there was music playing however I did not show how the curtains opened or when the music came on as I did not want to take the idea from Matilda too much. I developed the idea by having the whole film as a stop motion animation and not as a real film which I feel makes my film more memorable and different to other films that use special effects. As my whole film was a stop motion, really I would say that the whole thing was special effects. The editing took quiet a while however i feel that the transitions and movement where as smooth as they could be before making the film look real. I got the critism when my film was shown to the class that I could have created a smoother zoom. I think that this would have been quiet hard as it just consited of photographs. Although I have 'magical powers' in my film, in comparison to Sabrina the Teenage Witch, I decided I did not want to add in the sparkle around the edge of thing that is moving and I also did not want to have the obvious 'point the finger and things move.' I feel that I did quiet a good job in representing how the items around the house were moving without being maybe tacky.
Story and how the opening sets it up
The story is not really simialr to any film I have seen before filmed in this way. If I had filmed it normally, I do not think it would have been that intersting a film however the lighting etc would have made it still look like quiet a happy young teenager/childs film. I would compare the opening credits to somewhat simialr to the opening of Napoleon Dynamite where the credits are presented on a plate full of food. I have challeneged and developed this idea, by making my film look as though it is also quiet 'do it yourself' and have the gloves moving around the fonts with quiet a school childish writing. I would compare the opening of my film to something simialr to that of the scene in Billy Elliott where he is singing and there are lots of odd camera angles showing close up and different angles on things in the room. The character of my film is not so much introduced. We begin the film by seeing her back and her walking away from the camera. We actually meet the character facially in the bathroom when she walks towards the camera.

I would say that I used and developed the ideas from Matilda for my genre where it is aimed and younger people however it is suitable for the whole family and would never get boring. I would say the opening of my film suggests that this film will be like Matilda from the fact that it is filmed in a house (also with Napoleon Dynamite) and maybe even the way the characters look.

Costumes and props
The costumes and props in my film were very similar. The clothes were moving around the floor and being put on making them both props and costumes. The character in my film began wearing a shirt and jeans. I was going to have the character wearing pyjamas in the opening stages on my preparation however I thought with this being a childrens film, it would not be suitable to show her getting changed fully so I made the character put a jumper on before she went out. The boots, the bag and the door are also props in my film as they are things that have been moving around and been placed in certain positions for the purpose of the film.

First viewing of my film

My film has now been shown to the class, after I have finally completed it, editing little bits and pieces. I feel that it went very well when screened as the only critisim I got was that I could make the zoom smoother. I understand this however I think that it would have been very difficult as I was zoomed out with my camera on the tripod and I had to keep locking the zoom and moving the bag then continuing with the camera. This was quiet hard and I think that I managed to zoom as smoothly as possible.
Documentation of filming process
This is just a quick video to document how I created my stop motion animation. I sped it up as it is just to document the process. I set up a video recorder on a tripod while I was taking the images on my still camera and recorded while I was working on my opening credits. This section of filming took 11 minutes however I sped the film speed up to 800%. I enjoyed creating this section and thinks that it looks good when all put together in the film.
Actual final filming session!
After putting together the rough cut of my film, I realised there was more I needed to add to it. On Saturday 13th March I completed my final filming session. In this session I filmed Lex opening the door and calling over her shoes. This makes the film viewers more aware that everything is moving because of the character in the film. I feel that this session went well and although these sections were not on my story board I think that they fit in well with the film. I managed to get the same lighting in the rooms even though there was completely different weather outside. This is good as if it was any different it would mess up continuity. The only problem I have now that my film is put together is that on the section where the character calls over the shoes, the photographs cut at the top and bottom as if they are letterboxed. I do not feel that this effects my film, I am just unsure why it has done it. I have enjoyed creating my film over the few filming session days I have had and feel that it was sensible to do it this way as it has been easier to put all of the film together and edit it without getting overwhelmed by clips.
Edits to my storyboard
Whilst shooting my film, I realized that there were parts of my storyboard that I needed to change. I changed the part on the day of filming where the character was supposed to clean their teeth. I changed this to spraying perfume instead as I feel that it went better with the film and was easier to shoot whilst showing what was going on. I skipped out the section of the film that was on my storyboard where the jeans move across the floor and get put on as the character was already wearing jeans at the beginning of the film. I am still however considering putting this shot at the very beginning of the sequence in order to add more length and make more sense of the film. In the last three frames on my storyboard, this was also changed on the day of filming as the character now walks towards the back door rather than the front and then the film cuts before the character gets outside. I feel that these have been successful changes to my storyboard and bring the film together well.
Editing of my film

To edit my film, I used the programme Final Cut Pro on the mac. Here is a screenshot showing the time line of my film and my editing process. I enjoy using this programme as I find it quiet simple and like the final products it allows you to create. During the editing process, when putting together the titles, I had to add a white screen behind it as they were in different positions. I added in cross dissolve and fade out to colour transitions in order to make the cuts in my film run together smoothly. At first I had difficulty with a glitch in the soundtrack where it skipped a few beats and got louder at the same point. I have played around as much as I can with the sound and have removed this error the best I can. I now think that it sounds smoother and alothough a small jump can be heard I am unsure why this is as the music is one clip, not one that has been edited together
First film cut
This is the first cut of my opening sequence. As it is not quiet long enough, I will be filming some more sections to add into my film showing the story meaning more and adding in some cutaways. I am pleased with the way my film has come out and even though I havent got any dialogue in my film, I feel that it works well. With alot of time and effort, I edited my film together on Final Cut Pro using transitions and cutting clips to fit together. I will update the film when I have filmed more sections and add them into the film. As the film ends very suddenly, I am going to also add a fade to black transition at the end so as the opening sequence has some kind of ending to it.
Final filming session
With all my filming hopefully now complete, I can begin to put my film together. By creating a stop motion animation, my timing has been the hardest problem. I have been unaware of how long the footage of my film will be when put together. For example in this final filming session, I filmed 40 minutes to create 30 seconds in my film. I feel that this session went smoothly. I edited the exposure on my camera as the house looked quiet dark as it was raining. It now looks as though it was a sunny day and goes well with the mood of my film.
This final session took 207 frames to complete. I feel that this has been a success as there were no problems when I was filming however I have had to change a few parts of my story board to increase the length of the film. Where originally the character was supposed to clean her teeth, she now sprays on perfume and I also added in a part when Lex leaves the house, I film the door shutting behind her. I did not film Lex leaving the house and going out the door however as it was raining and did not want that to ruin the colour continuity in my film so it ends with the character walking towards the door but not leaving.
I also do not feel that it was a struggle working alone. In fact I think it may have been easier in this section. This is because I filmed it at my house and did it in my own time. The only problem I had was running around moving the items that were supposed to be moving by themselves in the film. With an extra pair of hands this would have been much easier. I am currently unable to add videos to my blog but shortly when possible I will add sections of my video and my final cut put together.

Analysis of the filming of my opening credits
Date: Sunday 21st February 2010
Number of still frames: 130+
After researching into opening credits, I understand that they are the most important parts of a film as they engage the viewer in the film and they show what kind of movie they will be watching. I have used several still frames for the opening credits of objects moving around my bed as it shows that this movie will be a stop motion. To make a smooth transition between the images of the bed and the words, I have blurred the image with my camera and have put a dissolve in using 'Final Cut Pro'. I am quiet happy with my opening credits and feel that they show a real atmosphere for what my film will be like. I will soon be uploading a rough cut of my film minus the parts with the character in as I am filming at the weekend. This will give me an idea on how much I need to edit in the film, roughly how long it will last and how everything will fit together. After the weekend I will then edit in the parts of the film that include the character and write up another analysis of how that filming and editing went.
I am also now contemplating refilming the top moving across the floor again as the room has now changed and the continuity will not be the same. I will for the time being, in my rough cut, edit the part that I have already filmed into the film as it will give me an indication of time and smoothness with transitions.

Shooting schedules

These shooting shedules shows the parts of the film that I will be shooting with the character included. There are two filming sessions on different days. I have had to space the time out for filming over the weekend periods because I need daytime lighting and during the week I am at school and Lex is at work. This is fine howeever because I have to edit all the sections of the film inbetween during the week without getting overwhelmed with photographs and things going wrong. Even though the weather may change throughout the week, I am able to set my camera to create the same lighting as the time before, as it is a still digital camera as apposed to a video recorder that does not have a variable apeture or ISO setting.
Storyboard of opening credits

This is the storyboard of my opening credits. It was to help me work out how I am going to get everything to move around and work properly. I have used the same clothes and the same gloves that I was planning to and I am still using paper with the words printed on it. I have however added in lots more frames of the clothes moving around the bed and instead of having the gloves dragging on the pieces of paper, I am having them overlapping and moving out of the way of the words so you can see them. I have unfocused everything at the beginning so when I add a transition in, the blend together smoother. I also no longer have the last frame on this storyboard. Instead, I am going to have the title against a black background so it is easier to read.
Titles and music
I am beginning to look into the music I will be using for my film. After thourough searching I have found a song by Leslie Hunt that is copy right free and I feel that it will be suitable in my film. I think that this will suit my film as it is quiet fast, upbeat and when I tried playing over parts of my films it went well together. I am not having any dialogue in my film so a fast song that has a good beat is very important. For the opening credits in my film, I need to show what kind of film this is going to be so I am going to also use stop motion for this section. I will film the titles crediting myself, the actor and the music in a font that will demonstrate to the viewer what kind of film this is. I have looked on serveral sites but have found http://www.dafont.com/ to be the best website for the type of fonts I am looking for.
Screenplay

This is the screenplay for my film. Although there is only one line of dialogue for the character, it also helps me and them establish where they and I am supposed to be in each shot. I have written the location of each shot, whether it is inside or outside, where I will be standing to shoot each frame and what happens in each scene. I have also added the sound effect for each clip however I am now considering changing this to music. I have chose to call my film 'Un Autre Jour' as it means 'another day' in French. I chose to make the title French as it makes it more intersting and maybe will encourage people to look into the film, have more interest and see what it is about.
Re-edits
I had planned on my next filming schedule that I would be filming yesterday (Thursday 4th). I did not manage to do this however as it was a miserable day and the lighting in the room made it not possible to film properly. As it is a little lighter out today, I thought I would film the re-edit of the top moving out of the wardrobe as there were mistakes in the previous one. I am now happy with this part of the film and feel that it was a much greater success. There is a clip where the camera jumps from one shot too another. I feel that this was the easiest way to show the clothes moving along the floor as in the last attempt it did not look right moving the camera at the same time as the jumper. This is now made up of 29 still frames at a rate of 9 frames per second.
I will later attempt to film the trousers coming out of the wardrobe and maybe the close up zoom in of the bag by the desk which is what was planned on my filming schedule from yesterday. I hope that these will also be a success and that the filming for my opening sequence will go smoothly.
First shooting session
Date: 1st February 2010
Began filming at: 9.20am
Part of film: Top moving out of wardrobe and across floor
Made up of: 22 still frames
Today i shot the first part of my film. I feel that the part in which the top began moving out of the wardrobe was a success however I feel that I need to re-film the part where the jumper is moving across the floor. I think that I need to re-film this as when the clothes move along the floor, I need to pan the camera with the top however in the film I have just done it came out slightly jerky as I had to tighten the tripod each time I moved the top to stop it from slipping. I am going to use someone to assist me in the moving of the clothes so I can hold the tripod loosley and be able to pan downwards.Although I am very happy with the movement of the jumper moving off the hanger, I now realise I have to refilm the entire scene because of the bed covers and the post-it note which is on the bed which is no longer there which will ruin the contiuity if when I later film, there are bed covers there.
Date: 1st February 2010
Began filming at: 1.20pm
Part of film: shoes moving across the floor in hallway
Made up of: 19 still frames
This is another part of my film that is on my shooting schedule and I managed to complete. I feel that this part went well as it is a very smooth movement as the shoes are shuffling across the floor. I like the warm lighting that this scene has. I have not changed any part of my storyboard to create this and feel that it was a great success. I was not disturbed at any point and this was not a very hard part of the film to film. I think that th movement of the shoes is somewhat realistic to how they would move if they were on people.
Date: 1st February 2010
Part of film: very beggining where curtains open byt themselves
Made up of: 10 still frames
These are the very beggining shots of my film. There are what will open my film after the opening credits so they have to be impressive. This took longer to make then I had palnned on my filming schedule however I feel that the slightly off centred angles add more of a natural look to the shot. I like the way the lighting is made pink by the curtains. I feel that this scene is quiet a success as the jerky moves make it obviously stop motion however I am unsure if it would be better if the movements where more subtle. I may refilm this if I feel that once the rest of my film has been put together that it doesnt suit or fit in with the rest of the movements in the opening sequence. I did not have to make any changes to my storyboard for this section of the filming as it was my first part of the sequence, does not include any characters and was quiet easy to get the lighting how I wanted. I was originally quiet worried that the camera would not take well to the dark lighting however I think that it has worked well.

this is my story board for what the opening 2 minutes of my film will include. It includes 20 shots on the plan but will obviously include more as I am using stop motion. I feel that even though my shots are not exact because of this, it will help me greatly when filming. I am considering calling my film 'Another Day' however I am unsure of this yet which is why the title has only been penciled in. After creating this story board, I now feel more confident about making my film and think I will have alot of fun making it. Throughout the shots, you can see how the girl is going about her normal routine. Involving stop motion will make this much more exciting that could it could sound if it were just a normal film. I feel that because this is in my house I will also enjoy it more knowing that I am aware of everything around me. For sound on my film, I am contemplating having music or having noise and making it more of a childs film. I was thinking about both and having music being lowered as a noise happenend. I think that I will choose to have just sounds in this film as it will make it appear more comical perhaps and I think it will go better with the mood and nature of the film.Casting shot
Location shots
I have chosen my location to be my house. This is ideal for what I am going to be filming and it is also very easy. I can keep all my equipment at home and safe and know where it all is. It is also very easy to be sure that I will not be disturbed in my house as everyone in it will know what is happening. I will need to use artifiial lighting in many of the rooms as they appear quiet dark on cameras. I have a reflector and some flashes which i may be able to use to increase the light in the film and make it look like a much warmer and lighter environment.
DSLR stop motion
Desicions
I am currently in the process of creating my story board and writing my screen play. After writing out a shot by shot list, I think that I will need to have around 21 shots to complete the opening two minutes of my film.
I am also trying to decide whether I will use 'iStopMotion' or 'iMovie' to create the stop motion part of my film. I will soon upload some experiements I have tried using a DSLR camera and the use of 'iStopMotion' and I will also try with a video camera and connect the clips together on 'iMovie' and see which works the best with the rest of the film, gives the best look and is the easiest to use.

Target audience and synopsis
The target audience for my film is between the age range of 7 - 15. It is however a light hearted, easy to watch film that makes it possible for all the family to watch including younger children and parents as well as teenagers. I would rate this film as a PG for the reason that it might not be a film that would be understood so much by children that were not accompanied by an adult. There is also a fast pace at the beggining of the film which may mean that younger children might not be able to keep up. I feel that this film would be suitable for both genders of its target age range however I am unsure whether it would be viewed by teenage boys as the story line is one that may be percieved as quiet childish to them. I would say that my film would not be suitable for anyone that is into serious films such as horror films and serial dramas. I would like my film to be mainstream in local cinemas and think that this would be possible with advertising showing the light heartedness of the film. I feel that it would do well as there are lots of families that go to cinemas. I feel that the best time to release my film would be during a school holiday where many parents are with there children and children and teenagers have the time off school to go to the cinema.
My film centres around the idea of stop motion. It is going to begin with a daily rountine of somebody getting ready, out of bed, into the bathroom and getting dressed etc. The curtains will open by themselves and while getting dressed the clothes will slide off the floor. This will be the part that I am filming.
The rest of the film will lead to showing the persons magical powers letting them down when one day they discover they no longer have them. Towards the end of the fillm, the person regains their powers when they find them under the bed in a big sparkle.

Influences
I have researched into films to find out which type of film I would like to make the opening two minutes of. I have researched Matilda (1996) by Danny Devito as my main influence. In this film we see that Matilda, a little girl that is not cared for, starts school and discovers that she has magical powers. When she discovers that she has these powers, she uses them the best she can to gain revenge on her family and her headteacher at school. The scene in which Matilda uses her powers at home where we see playing cards flying around and the cereal bowl spoon lifting up by itself is the part that has inspired me the most as I am hoping to create stop motion in my film. I have also looked at films such as 'Chicken Run' (2000), 'Wallace and Gromit' (2005) and 'The Nightmare before Christmas' (1993) as these films are stop motion but in different ways. These use puppets or clay figures but in general they portray the message that each thing that is moving in these films is unusual. In 'Chicken Run' we know that chickens move about but in the film they are given characteristics and personalities which we are not used to. This is the same in 'Nightmare before Christmas' where we see skeletons moving about and talking.
Chicken Run is an animation. Researching further into the film, I have found out that the chickens wear scarves to hide the joint between the head and the body. The scarves hide the seam that join the 'body' of the chicken which are made up of articulated steel frames coated in silicon rubber while the heads are plastersine. I think that the smooth movements in this film are very good and make it seem possible forthe animals to be real. I am however creating a more jerky movement in my film where it will be obvious that it is stop motion and things do not move as they should.
The Wallace and Gromit films are shot using stop motion. After detailed storyboarding, and set and plasticine model construction, the film is shot one frame at a time, moving the models of the characters slightly between to give the impression of movement in the final film. In common with other animation techniques, the stop motion animation in Wallace and Gromit may duplicate frames if there is little motion, and in action scenes sometimes multiple exposures per frame are used to produce a faux motion blur. Because a second of film constitutes 24 separate frames, even a short half-hour film like A Close Shave takes a great deal of time to animate well. General quotes on the speed of animation of a Wallace and Gromit film put the filming rate at typically around 30 frames per day — i.e. just over one second of film photographed for each day of production. The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is a perfect example for how long this technique takes to make quality animation; it took five years to make.
As with Park's previous films, the special effects achieved within the limitations of the stop motion technique were quite pioneering and ambitious. In A Close Shave, for example, consider the soap suds in the window cleaning scene, and the projectile globs of porridge in Wallace's house. There was even an explosion in "The Auto Chef", part of the Cracking Contraptions shorts. Some effects (particularly fire, smoke, and floating bunnies) in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit proved impossible to do in stop motion and so were rendered on computer. However, in A Grand Day Out, when Wallace struck a match the fire was made of red and yellow tissue paper, and if one looks closely at the fuse, in some frames there was actual fire.

Overall these films have encouraged me to create a light hearted film in which I can use stop motion.
Critical analysis of 'Office Space' (1999)

The opening two minutes of a film are probably the most important part of a film to get right. They are the part that will make you decide whether you want to watch the rest of the movie or not. At the beginning of the film 'Office Space' (1999) we see the '20th Century Fox trademark logo opening the film. This is the first aspect of the film that encourages us to keep watching it as we are aware of the success they have had with film
s in the past such as ‘Home Alone’ and ‘Titanic’.
s in the past such as ‘Home Alone’ and ‘Titanic’. The opening credits in the film ‘Office Space’ are placed over the opening sequence of the film. The font, which is the same font used in the title, gives us an idea that this film is a comedy. We can tell this because of its quirkiness and the way it is slightly scattered around the screen. The blue font colour also helps us to understand that this is a comedy and not a serious film such as ‘Angela’s Ashes’ (1999) where there is a plain, simple, white font showing its more serious nature.
We are also introduced to the main characters in the beginning of ‘Office Space’. We are shown their personalities when we see them in the traffic and each one is behaving in a different manner. The music is upbeat and makes light heart of the situation we are seeing. When you see the elderly man with the zimmer frame overtaking the cars in the traffic this is another indication that the film you are watching is a comedy.

media studies brief
The set brief for our Video project is to create the titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes. This blog will document the pre-production, production and evaluation stages of this project.
